Miguel released his debut album All I Want Is You in November 2010 after it had been shelved by Jive Records for two years, It sold poorly at first and was underpromoted by Jive, amid the label's dissolution. One of 2012's most critically successful releases, it was viewed by reviewers as an innovative and appealing R&B album, receiving praise for Miguel's singing and songwriting. Kaleidoscope Dream debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 71,000 copies, eventually selling 535,000 copies total by 2015. The album was promoted further with three singles, including his biggest hit yet " Adorn", and his touring in North America and Europe from 2012 to 2013. In marketing Kaleidoscope Dream, Miguel previewed the songs virally through a series of free EPs. Miguel titled Kaleidoscope Dream as both a metaphor for life and the creative freedom possible in dreams, while wanting to reflect his lifestyle and personality in the songs, which deal mostly with sex, romance, and existential ideas. With his studio personnel, he incorporated dense bass lines, buzzing synthesizers, and hazy, reverbed sounds into a musical style that draws on pop, funk, rock, soul, electronic, and psychedelic genres. With the album, Miguel wanted to explore the roots of R&B beyond the genre's contemporary trends and began playing guitar as a compositional source for his songs. He recorded most of the album at Platinum Sound Studios in New York City and MJP Studios in Los Angeles, working alongside producer-musicians Oak Felder, Jerry Duplessis, and Salaam Remi, among others. After the commercial breakthrough of his debut album All I Want Is You (2010), Miguel pursued a greater creative role on Kaleidoscope Dream as its principal writer and producer. The track is expressing in a very unique way about a women’s “hello kitty” is only for one person which in some way defines someone. From telling a woman to arch your back and point your toes it relays a very intimate setting. “Arch Point” is an instructional how to about sex. The hip-hop melody is definitely something that will catch your attention instantly. “Where Is The Fun In Forever” is about celebration of the moment you are in now and not later. The drinking theme seems like a best friend who is pushing you to talk to someone you been eyeing all night but just wouldn’t dare talk to if you were sober. “How Many Drinks” talks about experiencing seeing someone who is attractive but you are too shy to say anything to them because you don’t want to deal with rejection. In other words, think of this track as mental foreplay. “The Thrill” simply put is just about the excitement of being with someone either it while drinking at a bar while your favorite song is blasting to dancing until the lights come on. Of course, the sexual theme is within this song as well but it seems to have an underlined Alice in Wonderland element to it. “Kaleidoscope Dream,” the title track, explains how a girl’s body and presence can be the best thing of sleeping at night or while under the influence of something. From asking about drugs to love, the track simply falls back into the theme of sex. “Do You” comes off with an inquisitive flair. ![]() The beautiful nightmare analogy interrupts that it’s a great feeling but unfortunate situation. “Use Me” exclaims how a drunken mind can show a person’s true sexual desires. Also, the undertone message of forgiveness corresponds to the dark-like mood it portrays. “Don’t Look Back” gives you a sense of visualizing a crime helping and in traditional fashion someone may not make it back alive. Appreciation from a smile to comparisons to the stars relates closely to the message don’t change a thing because I adore everything about you. “Adorn” is expressing how simple things of an individual can relate to love and affection.
